Afternoon all,

I just had a friend from work mention that I should get regular check ups from my doctor while loosing weight. She seems to think that there is a possibility of your body going into shock or something if you loose weight to quickly. ???

Personally I feel fine, but just interested in others opinions?

I started the weight loss on the 1st Jan and since then I have lost 13kg (nearly 29 pounds for those of you who dont do kilos :-) ). It's an average of 1.6kilos per week (3.5 pounds).
I had mentioned that if I can keep this pace up I could loose 20 kg (44 pounds) by the end of March, which is 3 months.

I have been logging all my food and keeping around the 1500 calorie a day mark, give or take depending on the day. Exercising of some kind 6 days a week between 30 to 90 mins a day.

Do I need to be seeing a doctor at all?

Thanx

  • I'm no expert but I'd say just keep an eye on yourself.

If you start to feel off or not quite right maybe go to the doctor.

Looking at your ticker you've got a fair chuck of weight to lose (like me) so it's not unreasonable to lose bigger numbers in the beginning. I would say at a guess (without knowing specific stats) that you might not be eating enough sometimes, so watch that, it could have a negative impact later.

But yeah, just do what you do and see how you go.

I agree. Also, If you are on meds for blood pressure or meds for anything for that matter, it is probably a good idea to get a checkup. Meds are usually adjusted by your weight and your blood pressure drops as you exercise and lose weight (potentially). If you are being monitered for any conditions, whatsoever, it is always good to check in. If you drastically drop or rapidly gain while doing the same thing diet-wise, then I would check in. Other than that, listen to yourself. If you feel like things are not right, you notice anything negative, then go in. If you feel healthy, no complaints, and are just STEADILY losing weight, then the choice is yours on whether or not to go in. I know it is a nonsense answer, but it really is up to you. Those above situations would be a necessary visit in my opinion, but other than that, I think you are fine to see where you are at. Good luck and congrats on the success!!!

I asked my doctor what she thought and she said I could have blood drawn every couple months to make sure everything was on track. (I have a vit D deficiency anyway). I've had my blood drawn twice so far and everything has been fine (other than my vit D which is still down). I think it is probably something to talk to your doctor about. (I've been losing about 5 kilos/month (quick conversion, I think it's right) or 12 lbs/ month).

That is the last place I go . . . . don't go unless I have to. I remain healthier staying OUT of doctors' offices. Just my opinion.

As long as you can afford it, it doesn't really hurt. It's up to you if you want to put up with the costs and appointments.

But, unless something's starting to feel off, there's no *need* for it (edit: Beyond standard checkups).

I have lost 200 pounds over 20 months and the only time I had tests was for a cornea transplant surgery after 5 months from starting. They did test to make sure I was fit for surgery such as blood pressure, ecg, blood tests and so on. I was still over 300 pounds at that time. I have only been back relating the surgery not the weight loss.

I'm pretty anti-doctor. I lost about 55 pounds with no help from medicine. I'm sure someday this will bite me in the backside, but for now I go once a year - and I'm not even sure why.
