I think it is realistic if you have more then 50 pounds to lose, inside of that 1 pound is more realistic. And of course it will not always be consistent, could be 1 one week 2 the next then none for a week. As I move along I am more focused on loss per month, then week.

Totally agree with this. If you have a fair bit to lose, then 2lb a week is acheievable because you can get a 1000cal deficit pretty easily, if you were eating at around 2500 or more. However if you are only 20lbs or so to lose, then you were probably only eating just over maintenance anyway, so a more relaistic deficit is about 500 per day = 1lb a week.

It's also not a simple science. For example, despite having been on a 600cal deficit a day (minus cheat meals) for 6 months, I have not lost a pound a week, every week. I did at first, but now it's more like 1lb every fortnight and I've even gained too, so be prepared for that.

I have mine set at 1.5 and it set my calories to 1349. I burn about 5 thousand a week so I have consistently lost 2.4 pounds a week. But I have alot to loose. I have 5 pounds to get to 180 and I would be happy with 1.5 per week but we shall see how it goes.

Even at my weight I don't really feel as 2 pounds is realistic unless you do something drastic and that's usually something that's not healthy.

With just 40 pounds to lose, I would set it to 1 pound a week and anything more is a bonus!

This is very helpful information for me to hear, my weight loss has dropped off to about 1 lb a week! Sorry I can't offer advice but I appreciate everyone's input!

With only 40lbs to lose, starting off at no more than 1.5lbs per week is best... better yet, 1lb per week.

1200 calories will most likely be far too low for you in terms of intake. I would suggest researching BMR and TDEE to find out what yours is and base you calories from a cut from TDEE (20%). Not eating enough will increase the amount of muscle mass you will lose along the way.

As you lose, you also need to lower your deficit.

I'm only 5'2 so I kind of feel like I have to micromanage my calorie intake. Also I am literally sitting a desk the rest of the day so I dont feel like I'm active person at all.

I'm the same height as you, around the same weight currently, on my *kitten* most of the day, and I'm still eating more than you and losing 1 lb a week. You don't have to starve yourself.
  • Do be careful - as a lot of people have said for the amount of exercise you're doing that doesn't sound like a lot of calories at all.
Maybe go and talk to a doctor? They can often give you more accurate information as they can weight you, do your BMI and talk to you about your diet (where you get your calories from as well as how many you eat).
    Good luck !

I've lost 25 lbs in the past year and I'm keeping it off. I averaged 1/2 pound per week. It was depressing at first but now looking back I'm glad it took a year. It took that long to figure out what works best for my body. You have your whole life, don't rush it!!!!

I know everyone is different, but when I first started my weight loss, I lost 30 lbs in about 4 months (which is almost 2 lbs/week). However, I drastically changed my eating habits and exercised about 5 days per week. I definitely think its possible, but be prepared to work hard!

Edit: Just wanted to add that my starting weight for this was 170, and I'm 5'-6.5"
And I think I lost more than 2 lbs at the beginning, and then as I got closer to my goal, it slowed down a bit, rather than a consistent 2 lbs/week.

It kinda worked for me for about 3-4 weeks, I was losing 2 lb a week but it gradually went down to 1 and now its maybe 1/2-1... I knew this was going to happen and did not get too worked up on it. I could not imagine keeping up a 2 lb per week weight loss with like a current weight of 150 lb...

And then there is that point when one starts more worrying about the "looks" rather than the "numbers". I am guessing this is when people start weight lifting and toning and all that. I am just not sure what point to start that, I am still in my "weight loss state of mind". I think I may need to lose more first?

I have readjusted my goals on MFP so now that I am allowed more calories hopefully I see some results soon and am just going to hope I lose a consistent 1lb a week.
