Marine physical fitness

I think the ultimate health goal would probably be in enough shape to pass the physical fitness test for the marines. I assume that is one of the most stringent physical requirements for the armed forces well besides some of the elite forces like Navy Seals. Am I correct is that one of the most intense physical fitness tests?

I looked up the requirement for marine males from what I could see they they have to complete 3 pull ups, 40 crunches (not sit ups anymore?), and a 3 mile run in 33 minutes? Is this correct? Are push ups not required?

Pretty dumb questions I know but I think to be able to pass some sort of physical fitness test based on pretty solid foundations would be a great goal! Any other ideas for looking at physical fitness tests?

Thanks for your help!

Go to the Tough Mudder site and see when its coming near you. If its 4 months away or more, sign up and start training.

Marine Corps PFTs are scored the following way for males:

Pull-ups: Each complete pull-up is worth 5 points up to a maximum of 100 points (20 pull-ups). Additional pull-ups beyond 20 are not counted and do not add to the score.
Crunches: Each completed crunch is worth 1 point up to a maximum of 100 points. Any crunches completed after the two-minute time limit are not counted and do not add to the score.
Three mile run: A perfect score of 100 points is achieved by completing the run in less than 18 minutes. One point is deducted from the score for each additional ten seconds that it takes to complete the run. Completing the run in less than 18 minutes does not add to the score.

The rest of the branches of service do push ups. Marines do pull ups. Some of the other elite units like Rangers and SEALs have a minimun number of pullups that must be performed.

The USMC PFT scoring is determined by sex/age. For a miminum score as a Female at 36 you would need to run 3 miles in 32 minutes. and execute 44 crunches in 2 minutes. As of now women can still perform a flexed arm hang, but will be required to do 3 pull ups just like men starting Jan 1, 2014.

Its not a dumb question but a very valid one. You do realize what you are asking for is the minimum requirement just to be allowed the opportunity to got to boot camp or if you are a member, not get forced out for poor performance? I will just leave it at that and suggest that instead of trying to get a minimum score on a Marine Corps PFT do what DavPaul says and sign up for a Tough Mudder or Spartan race (Easier than the mudder) each site/program will give suggested daily workouts. In 4-6 months you should be ready to go.

The Tough Mudder is very hard. If you can get through that passing a physical fitness test for just about anything should be a breeze and more than likely will be more satisfying.

    Hey guys!

Great infomation. I was looking for some kind of training goal that would probably be some time in the far off distance, and I was thinking that the marine requirements would be a good start. However, the mudder program looks intense and has many solid physical fitness foundations like the ability to pull yourself up and strong core abdominals.

    I appreciate the help!

This was a great question. Thanks for the info. I'd never heard of the tough mudder.

The standards you initially found are those to initially join the USMC. After basic training, as someone else posted, they are much tougher :) You could always strive for a perfect PFT score!
