Explain heavy ropes to me.....

I'm an old fart, I admit it. There were never any of these things laying around the gyms I worked out in when I was in high school and college. Now that i'm getting back in shape, I see these things everywhere...... in the gyms, on shows like "Biggest Loser", on a commercial with RGIII, etc.

Right now I'm considering changing up my routine a bit. There is a "set" of heavy ropes in the gym I go to. have never seen anybody use it/them/however you say it. If I am going to add this to my routine, how do I go about doing it?

In other words, is this more for upper body, for core, etc? If its an upper body thing, and I do it on "core" days, am I hurting my upper body recovery days?

I am really a dummy when it comes to this, so please keep in mind in any responses that you basically are going to have to explain this to me like you are talking to a 4 year old.
