Runner's Knee?

Has anyone ever suffered from runner's knee? I am training for a 10km race and have just recently started noticing a sharp pain in my left knee. It started at first just having the pain during exercise, but now it's all the time. Does anyone have any experience treating this or any advice on how to make it better? Any info would help, thanks!!

  • Do you do dynamic stretching and or warm-up BEFORE running and do you do static stretching AFTER running ?

As for the pain, I'd suggest taking a few days off, the knees are the largest (and most important) joints in your body !!! You can't allow yourself to injure them. The fact that you used to only feel the pain during exercise and that you now feel it all the time definitely isn't a good sign, it means that it's getting worst.

I'd suggest resting for a few days (avoid putting weight on your knee) and put ice on it 15-20 minutes, 3-4 times per day for about 3 days. You can also rub it with Myoflex (or similar analgesic cream). Static stretching could probably help, but sadly i'm not a physiotherapist so I can't help you with that :( ... If the pain doesn't go away in 3-4 days, go see a doctor. Don't be stubborn or you might end up permanently damaging your knees (it almost happened to me...).
  • Well first of all prepare to be frustrated. healing this type of injury takes time

    1) reduce mileage by at least 50%, and slowly re-add if you experience pain reduce or at least don't add more miles
    2) stretch.. knee issues can be caused by tight quads, hamstrings, or glutes
    3) Strengthen - Often times knee issues are caused by week supporting muscles. Strength train regularly to fix / prevent
    4) work on your form you need to be light, and land softly over-striding is a common issue that causes knee pain
    5) get some quality shoes (corrective or minimalist I think either can be effective)
