High cholestoral question

Just received my blood work back and LDL bad cholesteral is pretty high...everything else is normal...what does this mean as far as what I have to cut out of my diet. I LOVE cheese...does this have to go??? Or are my numbers going to majically go down as I lose weight? I am in 2 weeks on the new diet...I have already cut out fast food, white flour, just eating veggies, meat, whole grain everything and lo fat dairy...should I skip the worry?

Dietary cholesterol does not necessarily translate into blood cholesterol. Just getting your weight down should help immensely in that department.

Your doctor should be advising you on this.

Personally, I got high numbers nearly six months ago, and will be retested next month. In the meantime here are ten things I've done to try to reduce the numbers -

    1. Daily oatmeal.
    2. Kept my cholesterol intake below 300mg on all but 2 days.
    3. Moderated red meat.
    4. Severely moderated eggs (limit to 2 or 3 per week, as a rule).
    4. Ate more fish, especially fatty fish like salmon, and atlantic cod.
    5. Increased dietary fiber.
    6. Fish oil supplement.
    7. Made almonds a go-to snack.
    8. Used whole grain products whenever possible.
    9. Cooked in olive oil, safflower oil, or canola oil rather than vegetable oil.
    10. Lost 40 lbs.

My diary is public, you are welcome to check it out to see what I did. We'll see if it works.

Keep with low fat dairy. You may want to raise good fats like fish and avocados and olive oil. If you have only been on your diet 2 weeks give it a chance to work. Stress is also a major factor.

It really depends on the type of LDL's you have. Small dense LDL are the ones we should reduce. The easy way to figure this out is to look at your HDL and triglycerides..........If your triglycerides are high, over 150 and your HDL is low, under 40 or so then the likelihood that a person has small dense LDL is almost a given. Losing weight and reducing refined carbs has the ability for the liver to produce the larger more buoyant LDL, that's where I would start, it worked like a charm for me a few years ago.......my HDL is around 105 and my trigs are in the 30's, but I do consume a fairly low carb diet representing about 25% of my calories and mostly whole natural foods. Not only is the ratio of HDL to LDL important but the total number of LDL particles that make up that LDL number the more susceptible for traffic jams within the cell walls and for oxidation and inflammation to take place. We want large LDL particles. Ask your Dr for that test.

Yeah, one more thing. Eggs promote larger LDL particles and increase HDL.......it certainly took long enough for the media to expose this fact and why the change of heart about egg consumption. It's the fat not the cholesterol in eggs that does this, just to be clear.

50 lbs overweight. Focus on your weight loss and exercise. The LDL will sort itself out to some degree. Dietary considerations beyond getting to a healthy weight have little effect when you're this overweight. Get to a healthy weight, keep exercising, and see what happens. Most of all, keep talking to your doctor.

I too was hit with high cholesterol (genetic). The doctor doesn't want me to lose any more weight, low enough. I exercise 5 days a week, no red meat, I eat mostly organic fruits/veggies and lots of chicken.

She told me to double my fish oil intake and keep doing what I am doing. Exercise, healthy diet and vitamins. She found it odd that it was as high as it was especially after she saw my meal plan.

Now my kids' doctor is on the flip side. I showed him my blood work results and my meal plan, exercise routine and vitamins/supplements. He told me that its genetic. Yet, he said that he is in the group of doctors that believes our bodies adapt and evolve. He said he was tired of "charts" stuff people into ranges. He look at me and said if I actually went down to my "charted" BMI range, he'd probably put my in the hospital. With no family history of heart disease, he told me to keep doing what I am doing and just "be aware" of my cholesterol, but don't make it the #1 factor unless something comes up later with my heart. he said that he believes our bodies (my family) have just adapted to be being perfectly healthy with a slightly elevated cholesterol level. He knows of tri athletes that have high blood pressure and cholesterol. He said that when putting them on medication to reduce it to a "charted range" they actually got worse health wise but their "numbers" looked better....go figure.

So now, I am working with my D.O. and doing what she recommends. Even she said there really isn't much more I can do "food wise" to bring it down, but to have a shot manipulating my vitamin/supplement intake. I told her the last time I was on statins and CoQ10, I thought my legs were going to lock up from cramps while bike riding.

    What to do....
  • I received my blood work yesterday, borderline high cholesterol. My doctor said to keep fat at 30% of calories and saturated fats below 10% of calories, and to lose weight and exercise. Way ahead of you doc!

Don't wait until your next visit to speak to the doctor. Call or email for directions. You may find that you are on track with your current plan.
