Finishing up some stressful work stuff. Grabbed the bag of dark chocolate tips intending to treat myself to just 2 tablespoons full to push through the last hour. Should have measured it out and left the durn bag in the closet. I just put away at least a cup?? I'm not even really sure I didn't eat more. CRAPtastic!! I just logged it, but I am not even sure how much it was.

Oh well ... onwards ... Dark chocolate is usually not a danger for me. Chips, Hummus and Peanut butter (to together!!) are my big slippery slopes!

CRUD!!

Did you know that whenever you're having a real physical craving, it's your body speaking to you? (I say "physical" because sometimes there are psychological cravings like wanting buttered popcorn while watching a movie)

Whenever I get a craving like that, I close my eyes for a couple of seconds and think, "If I could eat anything right now, what would it be?" Sometimes I'll mentally rattle off a list of favorites and even healthy choices.

If I have whatever I'm really craving, I just eat it. My body needs something in that right now. Dark chocolate has magnesium, iron, manganese. Maybe your body needed some of those minerals.

However, I've found that if I don't sit and try to figure out what my body really needs, I end up eating a bunch of stuff until I find it. Which ends in a horrible binge sometimes.

Just a tip that maybe you haven't thought about, your body talks to you regarding nutrition.

    All the best!

Everyone does that from time to time, just focus on what you can do right for the rest of the day/tomorrow

well.....at least it was DARK chocolate. You got your antioxidents for the day. :-) It happens. Don't beat yourself up about it. :-)
  • I think a lot of people do that, don't focus on a bad day, I try to look at my weekly average calories. If I go over a bit I try to cut a few more calories the next couple days. Dark chocolate is a weakness for me as well, I love the stuff and it's good for you in small amounts. I can't have caffeine but I was talking to my doctor today and I told her I had cut out all sources of caffeine except chocolate, and that if I was going to have a vice I could do worse, and she agreed and told to go a head and eat it, just as long as I don't go crazy with it, and most times I can manage to stretch that ghirardelli bar out for 3 days, although some times it's gone in 30 minutes. .

One salad won't make you skinny, just like one meal (or pile of dark chocolate chips) won't make you fat.

When I was a little kid I asked my mum if I could eat some chocolate chips (from a box she had for cooking). She said no, went to do something and came back to find I'd finished the whole box.

I don't remember that but I do know that to this day I've never again eaten chocolate chips and the thought of it does not appeal in the slightest.

So maybe next time eat the entire box and cure yourself completely :-)

^^^ this is really good advice, because so many people think that cravings and overeating on specific foods is all psychological, lack of willpower etc. In many cases it's simply a survival instinct kicking in, because the body's not getting all the nutrition it needs. In some cases it's a lack of calories, i.e. your body's getting all the right nutrients, but not enough calories. If it's a problem frequently, going back to square one and recalculating your calories may be what's necessary, rather than looking only at micronutrients. (see the "in place of a road map" thread for how to do that) Additionally, craving carbs while eating low carb, or craving fat while eating low fat, is probably a sign you need to include more of those foods in your diet (the healthy varieties of them)

However, when it comes to chocolate, it's a drug (albeit a very mild one), so that may not apply to chocolate cravings. I eat very very dark chocolate (80% dark or more if I can get it) to satisfy chocolate cravings. It's very dark, so it has minimal fat and sugar added and you need less of it to get a good hit of chocolate (but the calories do have to be counted, because it's still not exactly a low calorie food!!). I'm a chocolate junkie, plain and simple. I'm also a caffeine junkie and drink black tea, no sugar. Neither of those things have much to do with nutrition, although tea can prevent the absorption of iron, so I'm careful to include a lot of iron rich foods in my diet generally.
