I use Salonpas patches. They smell just as bad. Have you tried an epson salts bath? I take one after every strength day and I think it helps. They even sell eucalyptus scented salts which is way more pleasant than pepperminty BenGay.

I used to rely on icy hot until that wasn't good enough, then I moved to Ben gay. But my back (due to arthritis, herniations, and an unwillingness to give up rugby) was becoming desensatized - No matter how much I put on - it was having less effect. My chiropractor said - HOW MUCH ARE YOU USING IT!!!! ....STOP!!! That got my attention, and due to other health issues I was medically retired.

I will say - now after a tough workout or an injury - I strongly recommend a soak in a hot bathtub with a cup of Epsom Salts stirred in. Relaxing and it helps remove the pain (not sure how - but it works!!!). I still use ben gay occasionally - but not often (no need w/o full contact sports in the picture).

for sore muscles I typically do foam rolling, contrast showers, and epsom salt baths.
occasionally I'll use aspercream if I really hurt something.

for sore joints I use equiblock.
