Okay, So I don't know about you but I personally have a little issue with PMS... I get moody all the usual symptoms and usually during this time period I eat super fatty and salt food and super sweet food. I crave it like a crazy pregnant woman.
Anyway, the point of this thread is how does your red tide affect you and your journey to super sexy health. What do you crave? Do you work out? What do you do to circumvent the effects of PMS in reference to your diet & exercise? What would you do to your period if it could manifest itself into a physical being?
I personally would punch him in the face repeatedly and rub it's face in the dirt, but that's just me...

You know me. I am an acupuncturist, and I view everything as a message from the body, and I view it holistically. I never recommend heavy exercise around this time. Exercise is ok as long as you feel better after it. During menses, things are open and already moving downward, so things like running, jogging, jumping, and doing heavy lifting are doubling that downward motion, and could be depleting your body's energy. Having said that, not everyone will experience that because everyone is different.
I crave chocolate and salt. (In our medicine, chocolate tonifies blood aka the nutrients of the body, so it makes sense that during this time of great blood loss, you crave something that will help you build back up your supply) Salt belongs to the Chinese organ of Kidney which is patially involved (in Chinese medicine) in the menses process ... ok. Having said that...
I do exercise if I can handle it. I try to just do calmer things: yoga poses, maybe pilates if it isn't a crampy day, and zumba on the PMS and spotting days. Heating pad always after. I try to incorporate my cravings, in small doses. This is my first MFP period, though. It has been tough.

I Think mine is coming up because I always crave Pizza and ice cream before hand and the last time I tried working out when my lady time was coming round it was SUPER painful, then again I was doing muscle work and it just ended up causing some SEVERE crampage.
That being said your advice is really helpful! Maybe I will go get something sweet since I still have 900 calories for the day even though I have had my breakfast, snack, lunch, and snack. Perhaps Ice cream is in order... chocolate ice cream... mmmmm0 -
I had never had a period before MFP, either. Thankfully, using the search function, I am able to find an unlimited source of information to help me deal.

I've got almost 2 awesome weeks (7 lbs lost) on MFP in and today is my hormonal day. I'm craving crap and I can't help it. I did my usual workout today and a little extra and all it did was leave me drained of energy, aching in my back and HUNGRY. It sucks to have complete control for the entire month and then lose it for two days or so. I'm still trying to figure out what to do next month because this "month" was a fail for me. I guess I have no advice to offer BUT you are not alone and when I figure it out, I'll let you know.0

OMG hungry! I could eat everything in the house when Aunt Flow is stopping by! I have P.O.C.S. and so my periods are not regular but when they do come I have severe cramps but I find as a previous poster said a heat pad is my best friend. My cramps are all in my lower back, it aches severely so I do some stretches that really help! Lie on your back with your knees up and let them drop to one side then the other, on your knees let your body relax forward to the ground with your knees under your stomach. Also ladies the new type sanitary pads from always that are made from a memory foam like material called Infinity are amazing! Try them you will never use the old style again......hope that wasn't too much info :blushing:0

Ugh, lucky! I recently bawled uncontrollably to a youtube video of a guy getting and Xbox for Christmas.
Seriously... it was worse than Claire Danes' cry face.

I just had my first MFP period as well as being the first period after starting an exercise program. Minus the cramps and I believe that is from drinking so much water, it was the worst (heaviest) period I have ever had in my entire life.0
-
i get bloated up to a few days before i start, i usually crave something salty. that being said, i just eat what i usually do, and if needed will have some popcorn, pretzels, wheat thins usually do it for me too. i crave pizza at times too so usually joe knows to order one lol. i do a little exercise, but crunches actually help me so i do those (i do them anyway). as far as the cramps, i have been on bc a few years and that drastically helped, it used to be so heavy and painful when i was in hs mom would have to call me out sick. i dont have a heating pad, but a hoodie with my hair straightner over it does the trick (not sure how safe this is though). and if i could, i would make my period get a period just so it would have to suffer too. i'm still looking into having my whole reproductive system removed, it's useless.0

Likely the whole reason I came in here is because it said Ladies Only. That being said we do a lot of studying about the hormones of PMS and Menstrual Cycles in almost all of my fitness/medical classes.
Sad fact is there is not much you can do about it. Your body is preparing to have a baby and the hormones tell you to not only pack in food, but it also makes your emotions out of whack. While I have no idea what it is like it is 100% unfair to women and I do sympathize. So yes you will gain weight even if your diet is spot on... sorry but it will also come flying off once your all done. If I was a woman I wouldn't weigh myself for about 2 weeks in that time frame.0 -
I get really sad and lose my appetite altogether. I think a lot about the past and take extra long naps. When I eat, I usually work in some chocolate, but that's no different than any other day. I've noticed that drinking at least 10 glasses of water a day keeps me from getting cramps. I also make sure not to go over my sodium allotment during that time, otherwise I gain a lot of water weight. I don't mind TOM much. I do wish he didn't make me so sad, though. MFP has been very helpful in regards to dealing with TOM. Now I know what to watch for so I can make his visit as painless as possible.0
