Doctor Wake Up Call

Obviously, I am the one overweight not my husband. He has been small as long as I have known him and even from his family, they say he was small growing up. So if I go to the doctors I expect me to get the whole, "You need to lose weight for your health" speech. Yet, yesterday at my husband's visit, he had elevated blood pressure among other things. This was a shock because I always deemed my love to be the healthier one in this family.
Yes, we been slacking off of working out since we both got out of the military. I gained weight from being pregnant and he been more relaxed since getting out. However, our fitness has definietly taken a back seat to other things in our life. This maybe sad but true.
We already knew we needed to be more caring about our health. I know I can see how out of shape I am when picking my son up is a stuggle or I get a glance at myself in the mirror. In fact, my husband's doctor visit only reaffirmed what we knew deep down to be true.
The only question now is do we continue to ignore the signs and this wake up call or do we do something about it. I know the rode for us will not be easy to say the least but we must at least try. If not for our own health at least to be around for our son.

What are you thoughts? What inspires or motivates you to lose weight or maintain where you are currently? What advice do you have for us?

I haven't been in that situation but I would say being healthy for your son should be motivation enough! Include him in healthier eating and going for walks!

I get motivated by the fact that I'm not in good health and I have a young child that I need to live for. When I realized that I cannot run through the yard without gasping for air, I never have energy to do anything, and am tired all the time, I knew I needed to change or my son would lose me at a young age.
I use music to help me get going during my workout. I listen to upbeat, fast paced music to get my mind focused and my body moving. If you have healthy issues, you should not ignore them, you should fight them!

    Good luck!

Thanks ladies! And Leah, I know exactly how you feel. Being out of breath p-laying with a child doesn't make me feel good at all. I am glad I came to this site to help me get were I need to be. Good Luck to the both of you two!
  • Hello. I am brand new to this site. My name is Cheryl. My Doctor says If I don't change my 'way of living' I will prolly not make it into my 60's. So here is a brief summary of why I have decided to become healthy.
My Doctor says all my 'numbers' are high. I do not wish to die yet. My cholesterol, my lipids, my blood pressure, my sugar, and my bone density are all at unhealthy levels. I am a high stress person. I am also going thru my 3rd big break-up. Can you all help me... in any way? Hugs!!!

I really believe that to be successful, everyone needs to truly find their own reason. That reason alone will be motivating over and over again, and will get you on to the next day when you've had a crappy one.

Find your reason, grab it by the b*lls, and pull hard. :flowerforyou:

I was in the same boat- on meds for high cholesterol and high blood pressure at 26. I was also pre-diabetic. I knew I couldn't put my kids through the emotional turmoil of being unhealthy and having health issues so young. I just didn't want to feel unhealthy anymore either. Plus, my dad is a severe diabetic and has lost five toes because of his health. No thank you!

So I taped pictures I hated of myself in kitchen cabinets, pictures I wanted to look like too. I also put a picture of myself I HATED next to my bed so when my alarm went off super early to work out, I would get out of bed. I rewarded myself with manicures at every 10 lbs lost. I had a support group on facebook to help keep me accountable.

I started working out at home because there was NO WAY I was going to a gym in my shape :( Best decision I've every made though! I tried eating healthier and it gets easier over time. I have found new foods I love- like almond butter, avocados, cauliflower, fish, brussel sprouts, kale, and any lean meat.

I hope this helps some!!! PM me or add as a friend if you'd like to!

First, make sure your husband takes the blood pressure thing seriously. His size may not have anything to do with it. I was diagnosed with it when I was in the Army and I was in the best shape of my life. The thing that motivates me most is wanting to live a little longer...but on that same note, I don't want to live longer just for the longevity of life, I want to be able to continue to do the things I love to do no matter how long I live.
