Very Low RMR: Reasons For It??

Good afternoon MFPeeps! A number of months ago I had some metabolic testing done.Turns out my RMR is very low...979. I'm wondering if this is good or bad? I hear conflicting points of view! Also...I'm wondering WHY it is soooo low??Any insight would be much appreciated!!

My Diary is open if that helps at all!

I've spoken to numerous trainers about it also...they don't seem to have a clue as to why! Hmmmmm.....

Occam's Razor: the first test was inaccurate.

With a result that is such an outlier, you can't draw any conclusions unless you verify the results.

I'am 5'2" ...51 years old and weigh between 121/125...I do have a low thyroid and have been taking meds for it for about 5 years...very low dose of synthroid. Where could I get tests redone...other than my gym...would like an "outside" result??

    Doctor.

The only reasons I know of that are common for a suppressed RMR is a very low calorie diet or some sort of metabolic disease such as thyroid problems.

A slight leak in the mask for that test and your results will be low. Retest, possibly at a different facility.

From what I have read/heart, a lower metabolism is associated with having a lower body temp, and this is known to help you live a longer life. So get the test redone and if you do have a low metabolism just eat less, rug up more and be happy with the thought that you may be living a longer life thanks to it :) just remember to keep eating healthy of course!

Having a low RMR is bad, it means you have to eat less and burn more to lose weight at same speed as others.
    Reasons for low RMR are:
    Being short
Being skinny (the more fat you carry the more your body has to work to function)
Having low LBM (The more muscle you carry the more your body has to work to function)
    Having thyriod problems.
There are more, but those are the ones I can think of
The best way to get a higher RMR is to gain more muscle, by strength training 3-4 times a week

What I don't understand is why anyone who administers this type of test would look at a number like that and pass it on w/out question. If someone was 5'5" tall and normally weighed 140lbs and stepped on a scale one day and it read 400lbs, wouldn't you first check the scale, before telling them to run out and buy bigger clothes? (rhetorical question).

 This is definitely something to consider here. I worked in an Animal Hospital for many more years than I care to recall. We had a DVM there who talked about Occam's Razor all the time.

When you hear hoof beats, think horses, not zebras :drinker: also know as....'it's not a tu-mah' or my personal favorite, 'it's not lupus' :flowerforyou:

Thank you all!!! I have found a testing facility through a hospital...and will have it redone. Definitely want it done outside my gym!
