How many calories should I be eating while trying to lose?!

I've read a lot of things and I'm generally confused about what my calorie intake should be during this weight loss journey.
Now, I have come to understand that if you don't eat enough, chances are you wont lose. So I'd like to make sure I am eating the right amount.

My fitness pal has set me with 1400 calories a day.
I am about 5'3 and between 175-180 pounds (it varies a lot lately) and 22 years old.
So, is my fitness pal right?
Or is there a solid way I can use to find out?
By the way, I'd like to lose between 1-2 pounds a week.
