NRoL for Abs - Split Squat / front foot elevated halp

I've just started this program, and have done Workout A twice. Having lots of trouble with the split squat / front foot elevated. I can't seem to get my body to do them correctly. I feel like I'm not really getting down low, like my balance is off, I don't feel it in my core at all. I feel like I'm not getting the full benefit because I can't quite figure out the proper form.

So, any recommendations to either improve my form, or for alternative moves while I build up strength? I'm fairly new to regular lifting/strength training, but I mostly have the form down for everything but this move.
