Is all fat created equal??

So I guess this is kind of like the question should I worry about all the sugar I am getting since it comes from only fruit and not added sugar...which I know is still debatable across the board. With that being said:

I am adding a lot of "good" fats to my diet...(avacado, coconut oil, almonds) which is making my fat grams be really, really high. Should I worry about this? Or is it ok since I am not eating deep fried foods??? Should I still worry about keeping my fat below the macro limit. Because my morning smoothie with just one tablespoon of coconut oil is taking me more than half over my limit.

What do ya'll think??

  • I am by no means a nutritionist. However, I have done weight watchers over the years and they count all fat calories as the same and what I decided to do was not count my canola or olive oil that I was using to cook with or if I drizzled it over salads etc... I did not gain weight and continued to loose weight. I do find that sugars are different. If i drink lots of fruit juices (even 100% fruit) then I will gain weight as if it was a soda of the same caloric intake. Eating whole fruits are the best way to go. You just can't get the same nutritional benefits drinking juices as you would if you ate a whole apple with skin on or a peach etc.. You will also fill fuller as well. So basically as long as you aren't guzzling olive oil I wouldn't worry about using to saute things or drizzling it on your veggies or pasta. I don't worry about those calories and it has not affected my weight loss.

Thanks for your response. I do count the calories I am just wondering if I should worry about the fat grams and how many fat grams it is making me consume. I am staying well within my calorie limit however, trying to stick to the macro is impossible. Because as stated in my first post I am using more than half of my alloted fat grams by 10 AM. But thank you for your response.

No. Fat does NOT make you fat. Yours is coming from good sources, so don't worry about it

The only fats you should avoid are trans fats. I also have to watch my saturated fats due to high LDL...I just keep my sat fats within the DRV and I'm fine. I don't worry about my heart healthy, mono and polyunsaturated fats.
