What is the ONE best diet (not exercise) tip you'd give someone who wants to be fit - regardless of current age or weight?
Please give specifics - not just eat less.
Thanks!

Food doesn't make you fit. Exercise does. Food makes you a bit healthier. So if we are still talking food.... drink lots of water, cut out as much sugar as you can and add more fruits and veggies.0

If you are going to diet, make sure you know the science behind your food
If you are going to make a lifestyle change, make sure you know how to enjoy your food0 -
Don't start a plan that you can't follow for the rest of your life/eat everything in moderation. If you lose weight by cutting a food group that you later add back into your diet, you will just regain the weight.0

Make sure you meet your correct daily macro/micro nutrient values.

Fix your diet first, then tackle an exercise routine. If you work out and eat like a slob, you are taking one step forward and two steps back.0

Soda, Coffee, Tea, Fruit Juice and Milk are not water - when someone told you to drink more water, they meant plain H2O.0

I truly hope you're joking.0 -
Look at yourself in the mirror. not at your body, but your face, for minutes.... as time passes you'll see things, if you believe in yourself you'll see things, future, past, present, wear and tear, what could be, what it wont be. The only person that's gonna change things is you, beggers can't be choosers. do you.0

I'm not actually, I was quite serious about that one. Best advice I ever got (soda was my downfall there, but I've since fixed it)0 -
Small changes that you can keep up on are better than major changes you can't.0

Keep going no matter what. We all can't be good 100% of the time so what you had a bad meal or a bad day get right back on track and keep going.0

It took me years and hundreds of pounds up and down to finally learn how to live by this rule:
Just keep going. Keep doing your best every day. Even if you had a bad day yesterday, or a bad meal today, make the next choice the best one you can. One bad meal isn't going make you fat just like one good meal isn't going to make you lean. It's not all or nothing. Making great choices 80% of the time will make the not so great choices you make not so bad. Never give up!0 -
Set small goals for yourself on the way to the bigger goal.0

I genuinely know people who believe tea/coffee/juice/soda counts towards hydrating themselves for the day and replace water with it. It's ridiculous what people will fool themselves into believing.0 -
keep striving to make baby steps to go longer, faster and harder. You will burn more calories in less time.0

This is what I was going to say. In order to practice moderation, you will probably have to work on changing bad habits into good ones. I used to have 2 donuts every morning. I spent a lot of time "weening" myself off the donuts and onto more healthy breakfast choices and now I'll have 1 donut once every 2-3 months. If I ever said "I am never having a donut for the rest of my life" I would for sure crash and burn after a couple weeks and have 20.
I know you didn't ask about exercise, but another really important thing I kept in mind when making food choices is that what I eat is fuel for my next workout. Do I want to be fueled by a huge plate of fried seafood or lean protein and vegetables? It's a lot easier to make that choice when you think about it that way.
Okay one last thing, I promise! Learn how to cook! Lean protein and veggies doesn't have to be boring. Herbs, spices, and lemon juice are key for me.0
