Home cookin' Wedding Ideas

I just got engaged this weekend !!! :)

We want to have the wedding out on the farm and are thinking of making my grandma's spaghetti and meatballs for it. Have any of you had a wedding at home, if so, how did you put it on? What did you serve and how did you present it? Did you have your wedding at home or did you have it at a church and then have the party at home? I'm trying to gather ideas for all the logistics of it all.

It'll probably be a 200 person wedding, and I am really set on making my grandma's recipe for her spaghetti and meatballs and have no idea where to even start planning!

Help?

:)

We had our wedding in a church, but held the reception at our place. We included in the invitation that everyone should bring casual clothes to the reception because it was going to be held outside. We rented a couple of canopies and some chairs and tables, got a keg, some liquor and a couple of boxes of wine and we had a pig picking. Everyone had a great time and they were comfortable in their shorts and short sleeve shirts (we got married in May in NC and it was HOT!).

What is a pig picking? is that the same as a hog roast?

My friends had a wedding at a relatives place, outside.

When they sent out the invitations they asked everyone to bring a side dish to go wtih the whole hog BBQ they were having. I think there were about 80 people there.

    Rent port-a-potties.

That sounds great! I got married out at my family's property where there's a lot of room and it was wonderful. I wouldn't have changed anything except I forgot my dang $120 bouquet in the house so I didn't have it during the ceremony. Doh! Anyway....

My mom and grandma did most of the cooking. They did a few kinds of finger sandwiches & sandwich rolls, salads, and stuff like that. One thing they made was a little piece of chicken wrapped in a little piece of bacon and then that was dragged through a mix of brown sugar and cayenne pepper and then baked. It was SOOOO good! Those went really fast.

Probably, depends on where you are from. In NC, barbeque is a big thing and pig pickings are a fun way to feed a crowd. It was a lot less expensive than a sit down dinner and a whole lot more casual, which fits our personalities.

We might do the same thing for our 25th anniversary (4 years from now), but at the beach instead of at our house.

Yea, that's where we would throw an entire pig in a roaster thing. I definitely want to do all the baking for my wedding. I love to bake. I don't eat sugar at all, so I would make some sugar free goodies along with the usual cake, etc.

Are there any other ideas out there?

Hey congratulations! I didn't have a wedding at home, but that sounds like a lovely idea. I bet there's lots of good inspiration on pinterest! I didn't have a lot of money when I got married, so I delegated out a lot of jobs to different friends - one friend did the flowers, another the photos, another the cake etc etc. It worked out really nicely and I think people enjoyed having a job to do as their present to me.

Spagetti and meatballs sounds like something that could be made in advance and heated up, so that would work awesome. I would be worried about having the spagetti for that many people, and it overcooking, but I'm sure there's ways around that.

I Know why you have little response to this. Wow that is a lot of folks to cook for. Not to rain on your parade, but maybe shine a ray of light, I want to give you some info about food for a wedding.

It takes a commercial kitchen 2 whole days to prepare and feed that many people a main course with 2 sides.
so here are some number to crunch for the food.
spaghetti noodle. the average partier will eat 1/4 lb of uncooked noodles. That would be 50lb of noodles.
5 meatballs per plate, is 1000 meatballs
it takes take 1cup of sauce for 1 serving of noodles, if it is self serve most use 1.5 cups. a little over 20gallons of sauce.

    200 pieces of garlic bread
    3 cases of bagged salad
    7 shakers of Parmesan cheese
5 large ranch dressing, 3 itailian, 2 thousand island, 1 french

This doesn't include, cake, "baked Goods", drinks, ice ect.

If you can find someone who cater cooks and drop off the food, I would do this. They can use you grandmothers recipe. This is not an uncommon thing for weddings. This is your wedding you need to have fun and so do your special relatives. Brides always make the mistake of taking on to much, or putting to much on friends and family.
Good Luck I hope everything goes the way you want but better.

I sent the OP a PM but when I found this I figured this was on the money and basically followed on from my PM

A big thing to consider when feeding this number of people at such a special occasion is pressure, your mum & aunts will want to help but let's face it it's your wedding you want these people to enjoy the calibration with you and your husband.

(this is the reason I catered the last big function I had at home, I wanted all my family to have a ball) if you ask friends and family you will find some great caterers and usually it isn't horribly expensive, as they can calculate quantitys more accurately and also have access to bulk buys at good prices as they are buyin large quantities on a regular basis.

Don't write off the home function I recon it's a great way of having a personal intimate celebration

Some ladies from the community have volunteered to cook already, so it actually could be do-able! :)

O so its more than your aunt's and mum sort of thing

maybe, I got to say the 200+ is the scary part to me but if you have loads of helpers ot definatly makes them a part of the event

    go for it
