Baby after 40?

I have a few friends who are pregnant right now in their late 30's and one friend is 41. Several of my coworkers, friends, etc.. are making a lot of comments about women not having babies that late in life as it is not fair to the child to have such "old" parents and the risks that occur with a late in life pregancy. I say if you are healthy go for it. Thoughts?

  • If you are healthy I think having a baby after 40 is okay but I think 45 is probably the cut off.

It's not the age of the parents you have to worry about! There are very high chances of the baby being born with Down's syndrome when one gives birth that late in life! Suggest prenatal diagnosis to see if everything is fine with the foetus! If the baby is fine then I'd say go for it!

Unfortunately most testing can only be done after the baby is conceived and I think the first test they are able to administer is at 12 weeks unless that has changed in the last 3 years. I also have neighbors in their late 60's that have children (by adoption) the same age as my older kids and it's a struggle for them because their health isn't that great. I also worry about my daughter because I was 38 when I had her and I wish I had my children much younger.

My babies are in high school now. I'm 38 and can't IMAGINE starting over from scratch! o_O
