Teenage health troubles....

So my biggest inspiration to start this weight loss was a trip to the doctors office for my 14 year old daughter. She has always been a little overweight and has gotten increasingly worst over the last year or so. We went to the doctors and then had some blood tests done and the whole thing has been a rude awakening for both of us....We got test results back and she has high cholesterol and a high fasting insulin level. I am not exactly sure what this all means. We are being referred to a dietician and hopefully will get this under control. My thought is her sugar levels are high even after fasting so her body is not processing sugars properly....
My question for you....Is anybody familiar with these symptons? Does anybody have any recommendations on special food choices or books I can get to read up on this?
Who knows how long it will take for me to get into this first initial meeting with the dietician and I want to do whatever I can right now and not wait.
The good news is that this has been a bit of a reality check for her and she is totally on board with doing whatever she needs to do...the scare of type 2 diabetes, heart disease, etc all being discussed at age 14 were motivating and as a mother I want to do whatever I can to help her.

If you go to Search you can search the message boards for previous posts on any subject--I just typed in teenage diabetes for example--and there are many posts to go thru; you could try doing that to get some more information here too.0

Look at her diet and how many carbs she's consuming. If she's eating a lot of bread, pasta, starchy foods etc, that would increase her sugar levels.0
