exercise competition with friends

I'm starting a friendly little exercise/weight loss competition with some friends so that we can motivate one another!

Does anyone have any suggestions on
1. how to track it (weight loss percentage? inches lost? time spent exercising?)
2. prizes for the winner (short term prizes or long term prizes?)

Any and all suggestions would be much appreciated!

When we did something like that at work, it was done by weight loss percentage, I think that's the most fair. For every 150 minutes (based on the recommendation that an adult should do 30 minutes of exercise 5 times a week), you got entered into a drawing. There were gift cards or cash prizes, I think. I can't remember if they were done weekly or at the end. We also had a $10 "buy in" that went to the winner and 2nd place at the end. You could do a point system that is something like 5 pounts for ever 1% of your body weight lost, 1 point for every 30 minutes you workout, etc. Then, at the end, the highest percentage lost "wins", and the runner up is the person with the most points?

My brother is doing this with a couple buddies of ours for my cousin's wedding (he's the best man). They're doing % lost, 2.5 months and the bet is $100 per person.

I really like that point system idea, that's awesome! I often get frustrated when I don't lose as much weight as I think I deserve because I'll work out so much so it's a great idea to have a reward for effort put in because weight loss isn't the only benefit!
