How much fiber is too much fiber?

I just had dinner that consisted of the following:

2 cups grilled eggplant
12 grilled asparagus spears
1/4 cup cilantro
3 green onions
2 tsp parmesan cheese
2 tbsp green chili

Calories = 122; Carbs = 75; Fat = 4; Protein = 21; Fiber = 43; Chol = 3

It was delicious and oh so filling! I know that fiber is a good thing, but today my fiber intake was 89 grams! 59 grams over the 30 that is set for me.

Is that okay? I mean is there a negative behind too much fiber?

Thanks.

Yes, there is a negative with too much fiber. It can prevent the absorption of nutrients if you consume too much. I would say 89g is way too high, espiecially for a female. 30-40g is reccomended for a male, probably less for a female i would assume.

BTW that meal isnt 122 calories. The grams from carbs alone outweigh those calories.

    Thanks

I figured there might be a negative. Too much of anything usually is not good. It was a delicious day though and I'm WAY over on nutrients. 257% over on vitamin A, 1033% over on vitamin c, 238% over on calcium, 562% over on iron, and 878 over on potassium. It's nearly impossible to not go over being a vegetarian.

The calories are what MFP said they were. I don't know any other way to figure them. So far it's working for me to go by what MFP tells me

I think the numbers are off. Eggplant is more like 2 g of fiber per 1 c serving, not 20g

I don't track my fiber but that amount of vegies doesn't sound like a lot to me so if it's really that many grams then I probably eat more on a regular basis.

Being that high over every day would be a problem. If it is only once in a while you see dramatic jumps like this, I dont think it should be a concern.

I looked at your diary, and I think the fiber from the eggplant is too high. Did you check the database for confirmations? According to livestrong.com, one cup of eggplant has only 2 grams of fiber.

That being said, 80 grams is a ton of fiber. I would suggest that the level of fiber that constipates you is too high.

I chose an entry tat already existed for grilled "with skin."

Skin alone won't take the fiber from 2 to 19 grams. If you look through the entries on the database you will see that most entries have a lower valule for fiber.

    Wow!

Look at the difference! I found another entry for grilled eggplant and this is what my meal comes up with now:

    Asparagus - Grilled, 12 Spears (83g)
Kraft Foods - 100% Grated Parmesean Cheese, 2 tsp. (5g)
Onion - Green Onion, Raw, Tops Only, 3 ounce (28 g)
    Fresh/Raw - Cilantro, 0.25 Cup
Generic - Fresh Eggplant Grilled, 2 cup

The same 122 calories, only 23 carbs vs the previous 75, 11 protein and 11 fiber and 3 cholesteroal

    HUGE difference!!!

I just grilled everything together on an indoor grill.

To me, non-starchy veggies are free calories and I consume them in mass quantities. I also throw bran into my yogurt and my preferred breakfast is oat bran cooked in water. I am disgustingly healthy, I suppose if you ate so much fiber you had constant diarrhea it would be a problem but for most of the population the problem is too little fiber, not too much.

    Yum! That sounds good.

I still can't believe it went from 43 grams of fiber down to 11!!!!!

I'm going to have to start doing some comparison when making entries.

I learned this when my MFPeeps pointed it out to me. Watch for the number of confirmations, in red at the top of the box.
