Extra exercise didn't help-what the heck?

I totaled my cals for the day and found I was over by 224.I thought, I have time, I'll do a little extra exercise. I hopped on the treadmill and felt burnt out after 131 cals burned but I figured it was better than nothing.
BUT when I entered it onto the website, it only reduced the over amount to 197! What?
Any idea what is going on here?
BTW, I use a fitbit zip to track steps and it gives me an adjustment for actual steps taken.
