myfitnesspal, Fitbit and cycling

I've searched and searched and cannot find a definitive answer in the forums, so I will ask the question and see what the general approach to such a scenario might be.
I commute to work three days a week. During my commute I carry my Fitbit in my pocket which inevitably records some "activity", including changes in altitude, bumps on the road (which equate to steps) etc.
I also log my commutes as exercise in myfitnesspal, something like Cycling 12-14mph for 35 minutes, starting at 07:40 etc.
What is the order of events with regards to Fitbit, steps, calories etc? Does myfitnesspal write to my Fitbit account and Fitbit discounts those steps that were recorded during that time period?
Should I actually be logging the activity in my Fitbit account and allow Fitbit to write back to myfitnesspal? Does that provide a more accurate way of recording this type of activity?
What's the consensus, or does everybody do this in a different way?
