An article I read this morning, might shed some light on the whole "muscle is heavier than fat" saying.

I liked the visual that they gave with the comparison of 5 lbs of fat vs. 5 lbs of muscle. I also definitley know what they mean about abs being made in the kitchen: i have a very strong core naturally, but you wouldn't know it by looking at me 2 months ago. It's getting better, but i still have a way to go until i can get any kind of definition.0
