Do you really know what you're eating in those protein bars?

I came across a great article this morning while perusing through the health section of CNN. The article is about what is "really in" those protein bar snacks that claim to be nutritious.

Give it a read.

Yes because:
1. I know how to read a label or
2. I make them myself0 -
I think most of them are just junk food that's marketed as "health food".0

Teehee, love the description of gelatin! Yes the process is a bit gross, but there isn't anything in gelatin that will do much harm, yet she goes on and on as if it were worse than the soy derivatives!0

Quest = Heaven in my mouth

most, yes. there are some good ones out there though.0 -
One man's/woman's junk food is another one's health food.0

Agreed. Who said my double Big Mac couldn't be my protein bar? No one.0 -

This. If people don't read food labels, then it's their fault.0 -
Do church wafers count as protein since they contain Jesus meat?
Maybe you could just eat those instead.
Or, you know, actual meat. Which actually tastes good.0 -
Yes, because I eat Quest bars and not the sugar loaded crappy bars0

That was my thoughts exactly! I'd rather eat boiled animal parts (I do this quite often when making bone broth) than eat the other offensive ingredients like soy & HFC!0 -
maybe its where I live, but ive only heard of one of those bars!! But this was still a good read though. Ive never bought into these so-called healthy bars anyways.0

All protein bars are not created equal. I read my labels and make my choices from there. And sometimes I even make my own!0

I had to look these up. Do they taste good? I still wouldn't eat them "all day long" as I prefer to eat meat, veggies, fruits and nuts, but I would consider them for days when I'm traveling or hiking or something... maybe.0 -

They are the best protein bars I've ever tasted and I've true quite a lot. Lots of fiber too. Their newest flavor chocolate chip cookie dough is incredible.0 -

... Only if you're Catholic.0 -

I wouldn't eat them all day long either, since that much fiber would probably not be very comfortable (if ya know what I mean). But they are incredibly delicious! They are a very well rounded bar, probably an ideal on the road snack to hold you over between meals.0 -
I'm happy to read so many responses, since I have often started threads and nobody came. I don't eat protein bars or any kind of oat bars or granola, etc. I tend to stay away from them because I worry they aren't gluten free. I just thought this would be a great eye opener.
I also was shocked when I found out a certain brand of muffin was as caloric as 3 McDonald's breakfast sandwiches, or something to that effect.
I think some folks in the "health food industry" are trying to dupe us. Shame on them.0 -

Personally I wont buy or eat those bars unless I REALLY need to.. if I'm starving and out in the middle of the Texas desert.. then yeah I'll eat one... BUT unless thats the case.. I'll eat something else...0

Quest bars > your face.
Supreme aren't too bad either but aren't quite as good nutritionally or taste-wise.0 -
