Nutritionist

Do nutritionist really help? I know they can TELL you a lot of things, but can they really help you change your habits?

Only you can control habits. I don't think they are trained in psychology.

Yes my nutritionist helped me so much. She had a special scale that tells you all kinds of things besides your weight & was able to determine how many calories I should eat while doing P90X & to lose weight. And how much protein & fat to eat according to your stats - just so much valuable info. Last week I decreased my calories against her advice then got on the scale this morning & lost 0. So lesson learned...they know what they're talking about. Highly recommend. Also for a 15 minute session is only $25 cash without using insurance.

They can recommend books for eating habits. She got me to change my eating habits at night by recommending me to eat more fat during the day (good fat) & it worked because now I don't snack at night.

I'm a bit biased, but we have a few dietitians where I work and although they mostly deal with changing diet for pregnancy or for dealing with chronic conditions I've been able to pick up a few things that I had no clue about. Even learning about portions/serving sizes. I don't think it would be a waste of time or money - especially if you are newer to this whole eating healthier thing!

Not to hijack the thread, but I am curious about how many calories you are taking in while doing p90x. My wife and I are doing it also but we are both still trying to dial in our diet. Wondering how many calories she said for you to be taking in daily. I understand everyone is different with many different body compositions...just curious.

In my case, absolutely! I had lost 50 lbs and hit a major plateau. As a type 2 diabetic, she helped me understand that low carb was not necessarily the right thing for me and its more about the type of carb, and how to manage them through out the day. Also helped with suggestions on fiber, meals, etc. we meet every two months and my insurance covers up to 4 or 5 visits a year so that helps. She reviews my meals that I print out and bring with me. Funny thing is I taught her something too... Showed her my fitbit and she went out and got one for herself and is now recommending them to her other clients. FYI i was recommended to her by my Dr. And she works primarily supporting those with diabetes.

I am under the guidance of a nutritionist now. Well as of today. I am hoping its the best money I have ever spent, next to the gym.

That's great! It's the best thing I've ever done 4 my health. I just want 2 make a correction - I'm seeing a dietician not a nutritionist & she said the difference is a dietician has more schooling. There could be other differences, not sure but that is something she mentioned.

If you're really serious, and have 50# or more to lose, I would skip the nutritionist, skip the dietician, and look for a bariatric md who specializes in non-surgical weight loss.
