So what are we trying to achieve?

So I joined this site ten days ago and wow there is alot of jargon that gets thrown around so just checking if I am on the right track to lose weight, this is what I have managed to gather thus far:

1. Try always eat the calories you're told to (for me this is 1200 before exercise)
2. Try to match the calories btw the categories (ie carbs, protein etc)
3. Don't under eat your calories as this is seen as bad
4. Drink 8 glasses of water
5. Try exercise both cardio and strength

So is that a decent understanding or am I missing something?

PS. My gut says its good to eat less calories but this seems to be a big No No from what I see on the forums...?

Looks like you are on the right track, but in a lot of cases 1200 is actually too low. Hard to tell without more information like your height & weight. When I started, I went by MFP's number and I thought it was okay because I'd always heard to lose weight, 1200 is the way to go. I was starving and I wasn't properly fueling my workouts. Ended up tired all the time.

It has worked for a lot of people and it definitely worked for me. I get to eat more than 1200 & still lose. I stayed satisfied much longer so the diet is easier for me to stick with. Some people do fine on 1200, but I'm a big fan of eating. :)
