Hi. I know this subject has probably come up before a million times but I was wondering. I used to lift years ago. To start again, should I do 3 sets of 8-12 reps. (depending on the exercise of course) right off the bat with lighter weights or should I only do 1 set. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance!!

You should start with 5x5 using only the bar for your big lifts and add 5lbs each session. Look up Stronglifts 5x5, or Starting Strength. Either of those programs are all you need for at least your first year of lifting.0

The layout of the workout kinda depends on your goal. The fact that your getting back in after not lifting will only affect how much weight you can do, pretty much.
3x8-12 is a usual hypertrophy range, used mostly to build bigger muscle
as Loftearmen suggested, 5x5 is a hybrid between hypertrophy and strength
3-6x1-3 (or in general, higher sets, lower reps) is usually the ranges for strength.0 -
Thanks guys!!0
