I've always had a high heart rate while exercising- mid 170s to 180 usually from the time I was a young teen. When I started C25K and alternating the elliptical, my max heart rate would get up to 175 and not get below 140 after a 5 minute cool down- and that was only running for 60 seconds at a time! 6 full weeks of C25K later, my max heart rate is 160, down to 145 after a one minute cool down and down to 120 after 5 minutes.
