Sugar Intake

I seem to be going over my sugar intake every day by 10-15. But when I look at my log it's almost all from natural sugars (honey, bananas, and apples)

Should I be concerned/ Will this hinder my weight loss?

    1. All carbohydrates are sugar.
    2. Net carbs (carbs-fiber) should be the concern, be they from fruit, veg, or candybars.
    3. When too much sugar is present in the blood, insulin is produced in greater quantities to clear the sugar from the blood.
    4. Too much insulin causes cravings for sugar/starchy simple carbs.

So to answer your question, if you find yourself craving more sweet/starchy foods, your sugar intake is too high, even if it's just from fruit. Listen to your body and ignore the sugar tally. You should be just fine!

    Best of luck!

I always go higher in sugar too. I'm not that worried about it because I know my blood sugar is fine though, I just try not to eat too much sweet stuff... usually fails. Oh well. I lost the most weight before I even put the sugar macro in my log.

I try to monitor the amount of refined sugars I eat. But if I am eating natural sugars, I'm ok with it. I always go over in sugar, but that has to do mainly with the breakfasts that I have (either cereal or a smoothie)...

Thanks everyone! After reading these posts I'm not as concerned about my higher sugar level.

Uh, yeah, actually they are. Carbohydrates are saccharides, be they mono- or poly-. Polysaccharides are harder to break down because of their complexity, but in the end it's still a sugar.

Unless you're diabetic or have some other health issue that requires you to watch your sugar very closely, don't pay attention to what MFP says. It doesn't account for sugars in fruits (or veggies, for that matter) or things like that.

Are you eating well-balanced meals and snacks? There's going to be some sugar in there. Don't worry about it.

Note: I shed an entire person worth of weight (and a crap-ton of Body Fat) eating 100+ grams of sugar a day.

There are calculations you can do to subtract the fiber from your sugar consumption to get net carbs and you will probably see that you might actually be under your sugar intake. I find that watching my sugar intake helps me lose weight faster, but everyone is different. You have to find what works for you. Try eating less sugar one day and see if it makes a difference.

Huh... same feelings. I try to just try to eat sugar related items twice a day. If I can limit it at ALL. Everything seems to have sugar. That being said, just pay attention to added sugar, Like cookies and junk like food. I think naturak sugar is ok. As long as you stick to your daily goals. Goodluck!
  • I always go over my sugar limit too. I feel like as long as you're not eating candy and chocolate all day, it's not that important. There is sugar in everything but it can be natural sugar.

Thanks for this...great info because I've been concerned about the same thing. I am trying to listen to my body, so this is another translator--thanks again.
