FLAX SEED and I have no idea what to do with it! There are a few recipes on the bag, but I'm wondering if anyone out there has any useful tips for how they use it?

I put it in smoothies, baking, and make a flax egg substitute with it.

    are they ground or whole?

if whole, you'll need to grind them up first, then use in oatmeal, or shakes, homemade protein bars, etc

    They are ground.
How do I know how much to add?
Does it substitute for anything if I'm baking w it?

When I put it in smoothies or oatmeal, I just add a large spoonful and stir (or blend) in.

There are recipes you can look up that use flax seed...as for using on the fly - I think it's more to taste. I hear lots of people saying they use a spoonful with their oatmeal, etc.

There is no need to sub, just add in. They don't absorb liquid or interact with levening agents (such as baking powder) so they blend into nearly any recipie. Try them in small amounts first, until you know how much you like, as they do have a unique flavor.
