eating before and after a workout

Ok, I have just started really working out.. Both Cardio and lifting.. I do my workout at 4 am as it's the best time for me as I work out and a few hours later I go to sleep.. My biggest problem is what to eat before and after...I mostly do protein shakes before bed but with working out I have been doing oatmeal. Sometimes I will do a banana before I work out.. I have been reading that it's good to eat the oatmeal before a workout and have the protein shake after or should it be done the other way around...

Thanks everyone..

It doesn't really matter as long as you're hitting your macro nutrition at the end of the day.

Anabolic window isn't real and you could work out on an empty stomach if you wanted. People will get upset with this, but if anabolic windows were true we would've died as a species if we hunted and didn't bring back food.

I don't know for sure, but I was told that it's best to eat a little bit of something afterwards to help your muscles rest and repair. Don't ask me how it works, it's just what I've been told. I'm curious to hear people's opinions on this as well though.
  • I don't eat before a workout. I have dinner around 7pm and exercise after 9pm. I have a protein shake on my way home from the gym.

I hit the gym at 5am and my trainer told me to put something in my stomach before working out so i have enough fuel to get thru it after fasting all night. I usually have an EAS AdvantEDGE protein shake before i go. Then i make sure i eat within an hour after i work out or i will be starving. So i will have eggs or a smoothie or oatmeal for breakfast. If i work out in the evening i have one of those shakes before i go then dinner afterward. I notice when i get up in the morning and go to the gym without putting something decent in my body i dont have as much energy while i am there.

I don't eat an hour before working out. Best to have your protein as soon as possible after the workout.
