Do skinny people snore?

Silly question but I'm wondering. All the snorers I know are overweight.

(Things I wonder about on little or no sleep....)

    why drat?

My ex was really skinny and snored a lot. Also, my mother (5ft and 111lbs) is THE loudest snorer that I know.

some snoring is caused by being overweight, and goes away when the fat does. Just that this does not work for everyone, every time. I suppose it depends on many different factors. Sleeping on your side rather than the back works for some people too. Probably not everyone.

Because I was hoping that if I talked my hubby into losing weight he might either stop snoring (not likely) or snore less. :grumble:

Definitely, my husband (5' 6" & 117lbs) could shake the the house when he's snoring...doesn't matter which way he's lying and a good shove is usually the only way to stop him :D

My husband snores less than when he was heavier, but he still snores when he's very tired.

My husband sounds like a chainsaw. Not just a little chainsaw your average Joe owns... no, he's a professional grade Husqvarna. His entire family is rail thin, and all snor loud enough to wake the dead. I lived with his Aunt for a few months when we first met, she slept on the third floor, I slept on the first floor- she would still keep me awake at night.

Yes. I've known several normal weight people that snored like freight trains. However, when my husband lost 20 pounds recently, his snoring went way down, and now he only snores when he has a cold or is really, really tired.

    Some do.
However, being overweight and loose neck fat is one of many possible causes of snoring.
So, there is a correlation between being overweight or obese and snoring. Depending on the cause of your husband's snoring, losing weight may help or even stop the snoring.

My husband is 6'2" and was 145 when we met, 160 now. He snores. Laying on his side or on his back, lying with his head in my lap and swearing he wasn't even asleep, doesn't matter. He had his note roto-rooted a couple years ago (surgeon said his septum was "comically deviated). That helped a bit but he's back to it. He has a roll pillow that he can arrange under his neck that helps. But he never remembers it until after he starts snoring, wakes me up and I shove the pillow at him. Or start beating him with it, depending on how late it is and how frustrated I am.

Ok, I'm not a doctor but my understanding is that one of the main causes of snoring is a "lazy" soft palate obstructing the airway. I don't think weight has any correlation to this.

My husband is snoring right now. And he is a normal weight person. I don't know that I'd call him skinny. He's just regular. Normal build. So yeah you don't have to be fat to snore. Just tired.

I've snored for quite some time, whether I've been skinny or fat. My wife said it got worse as I got heavier, though. Mine is due to sleep apnea. I'm still trying to get used to the mask. It makes the bridge of my nose sore, so I usually rip it off my face a couple of hours after I fall asleep.

Some snoring is caused by the excessive neck weight being placed on the esophagus. When the weight is removed from the neck, often snoring will stop. Sme snoring is caused by tongue position like with my friends' normal weight 3 year old. People can snore for different reasons.
