How do HRMs estimate calorie consumption?

As of now, I only have an Omicron watch that requires two fingers to record HR. I do it periodically during brisk walks. The calorie reports are absurdly high (x3) when compared to the runtastic app (and using the runtastic figures has given very consistent results in MFP). Will a continuously monitoring HRM be more accurate? Why exactly? What is the reason to think HR is directly correlated with calorie burn (or is there a sophisticated algorithm underneath)?

It says (Someone of X weight burns Y calories at Z heart rate doing steady state cardiovascular activity)0

And do we believe that is accurate? Seems to be it depends on resting heart rate and that there must be a wide range of relationships between HR and calorie consumption. What kind of function of HR are we talking about?0
