This brilliant application has finally halted my binges!

I have lost a modest 6lbs since joining myfitnesspal a month ago, but the biggest success so far for me, is that by journalling everying thing I eat I have finally managed to halt the 1500 calorie plus binges (on top of a normal day's eating) at evenings and weekends. I used binge eating as a crutch for other personal problems, but of course, this just landed me in a vicious circle, pushing me further and further away from getting out in the world and living my life to its fullest and constantly feeling terrible about myself. I topped 230lbs at the end of last year, and so am quite pleased I am now down to 213lbs - but without myfitnesspal that would have been sabotaged by my bingeing habit all too soon. As an experiment after joining myfitnesspal, I spent two weeks eating 2000 calories a day, just to re-educate myself what "normal, healthy" eating is all about - and was slightly shocked when I realised that 2000 calories a day is about half of what I have been eating many days for the past few years.
So, this is to say thanks to the power of keeping a food journal and to the wonderful iPhone application that I really feel is going to help me transform my life. Watch this space!

Awesome job, congratulations! Having to log everything you eat, and then face those numbers, does make you think twice about whether or not you really want that brownie. For me, it makes me stop and decide if I'm actually hungry or if I'm wanting to eat for some other reason. If I'm actually hungry, I make a real snack or meal instead of just munching. If not, I just make myself busy until the craving passes. I certainly don't like to see those numbers inflated for no real reason! Logging everything is not an easy thing at first, I'm glad you've been able to make it a habit as it will definately help you reach your goal. Way to go!0

I agree. The logging is extremely effective. I used to just eat things without thinking about what I was doing. Now if I really want that cookie, I have to think about whether I have enough calories left before I have it.0

Wow! I SO TOTALLY agree with you!! That app has changed my life, too, and I'm venturing a guess that it has changed the lives of many. Thank you for sharing. Good luck to you on your journey to a healthier self.0

I will say that this does keep me honest. Having to log everything in makes me really think about eating at night. I am really bad about eating late at night. Now I am triying to do things that keep my mind off of eating late at night. It is a process though.
Congrats on your success.0 -
Thank you for sharing! I also struggle with binge eating and it is amazing how you can shovel in a huge amount of calories without even being aware of how much you consumed when you "wake up" after the binge. I am also focusing on just being mindful of when/how I eat. One of my goals is to eat when I am hungry, but I honestly don't think I have felt true hunger in months (scary, I know). Good luck with everything!0
