Is it 1 gram of protein per lb or per lb of lbm?

I am working out progressively heavier 3 times a week along with cardio 2 times a week. I have seen protein requirements come up, over and over, but I see two very different statements of best practice. One will say eat about 1 gram of protein per lb, while the other will say eat about 1 gram of protein per lb of lean body mass; which for me, is still a large difference.
So what's the correct answer?

I've always heard 1 gram per lb of LBM. The idea is that the protein is feeding your muscles, so it makes sense to me. Plus, I can't imagine someone who is 300 pounds eating 300 grams of protein a day...0

I've actually read 0.8-1 gram for pound of lean body mass. I just shoot for over 100 (I have about 125lbs of lbm).0

I was originally counseled by a fitness "guru" and researcher to eat 1gm/KG - and have read a lot of various advice since then. The best I can put together from all of it is minimum 1gm/KG to maintain muscle while losing weight, and 1gm/LB of LBM to add muscle when doing strength training.0

Oh and BTW it was 1gm/Kg total weight0

Here's a thread with some discussion of it, along with links to peer-reviewed clinical studies:

Thanks everyone for the responses. I am currently following the 1 gram/lb of lbm, but I just wanted to make sure as there was some conflicting info being offered to me. I am trying to do lose weight safe and correct (for me) this time around and whereas before I was all protein, all the time; and dont get me wrong, I lost big and fast, but then gained back with a vengance...I don't ever want to go back to where I was.
And thanks AnvilHead for the link as now I have some good reading ahead of me.0
