This is a good link to get started on portion sizes: http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/portion-control/NU00267

I had been working out for two years and only saw about a 10 lb. weight loss. Then I zeroed into portion control and I have dropped 38 pounds in six months! It made all the difference.

I also like following the diabetic guide for portion control. I'm not diabetic, but I find the diet works very well for me.

    Good luck!!

This one is fun it shows you what portion sizes looked like 20 years ago and there is a quiz to guess how many more calories are in portion sizes today.

From above link: There are many ways to cut down on super-size servings and practice portion control. The first thing is to train yourself to identify what a serving size should look like. An easy guide to follow is to use your hand as point of reference. For example, when deciding how much protein to have in your meal, such as a piece of steak or chicken, use the size of your palm. The amount of meat should be no bigger than palm size, and the thickness of the meat should be the same as the thickness of your hand. With carbohydrates, such as rice or pasta, this should be the size of your closed fist.

If you search the forums for "portion control" I've seen thread posted that give actual pictures to use as a visual reference. A serving of fruit is the size of a tennis ball etc.
