Has anyone tried either Iyengar or Ashtanga yoga? I'm signing up for a class with a friend and don't know which to go for!

If you do a google, you'll find descriptions of both. I did Ashtanga before it was okay, my muscles were sore the next day, which I love =) I prefer Hatha & Integral (sometimes referred as a subset of Hatha) Yoga.

I've done both. I prefer Iyengar, but that doesn't mean you will. I would try them both if you can.

If you want to move quickly in a possibly heated (90 degrees is the norm) room with minimal alignment, try Ashtanga.

If you want to know the how and why of a pose, moving slowly, in a non-heated room, try Iyengar.

I did a google search but wanted some opinions. Thanks. :) I think I'll just sign up for the one with the more convenient time!

I've done Ashtanga for about a year now-- once or twice a week to compliment weight training. It's a fantastic workout. Pretty strenuous at times, depending on what you're doing.

I'm afraid I'm useless for comparisons here though-- the only other yoga I've ever done was the um... I can never remember the name... a very slow, stretchy, calm sort of thing. Didn't agree with me at all. Felt boring. But to each his own.
