Bloated from new workout program?

I just started Crossfit, 3 days this week, and I feel really bloated and just "puffy." I am drinking plenty of water, I'm just wondering if this is a normal reaction to intense exercise after being sedentary for so long.

  • I'm interested to see the responses to this because I've noticed changes in my fat (it seems looser and squishy) but not much else seems to be changing, and sometimes it feels like I liked it better when I was big but at least solid, yanno?

I've been told it's worth it by a woman who just lost 60 lbs, but that getting through the "squishy puffy" stage is torture.

    Wishing you luck!

Based on what I have experienced in the past when my fat got squishy like you described after a radical exercise and/or diet chage, it scared me, but it meant good things to come. It was melting away. I don't know WHY it goes squishy first, but you should keep doing what you're doing, it's a good thing.

I noticed that back in my 20s when I reduced to only 500 calories a day for two weeks to get ready for a vacation to the beach.

It happened when I went low carb, squish and then fit.

It happened when I started P90X.

Thanks for the feedback! I am so sore, just working out every other day but even when I'm not working out, during the day I feel like I'm burning calories. Like today, just walking around at work I was kinda sweating because my muscles are still fatigued from my workout last night.

I hope you're right about the squishy-ness and then melting off! I feel like I'm wearing a fat suit while working out and I just want it gone!

it's cause your muscles are "pumped" to rebuild, if you went a couple days without working out then it would go back down and after a while your body will get more used to it, you're also probably just retaining some more water.

if you're that sore then your body will adjust to it, but you need to space it out more, if you do a full body workout with weights and stuff every day your body will not heal, do like legs, and arms, and abs and stuff on different days or certain days so that only some of your muscles are retaining water and healing at a time.
Also, if you drink a protein shake you won't feel as sore in my experience.

Thanks! I didn't think of the muscles being pumped up under the layer of fat! I am drinking protein shakes post work-out but Crossfit is a total body workout every time, I am taking a day of rest in between workout days...I think I just need to get used to it.

SWEETIE YOU ARE BURNING CALORIES, IT'S CALLED AFTER BURN WHEN YOU WORKOUT REALLY HARD, YOUR BODY BURNS CALORIES FOR EIGHT OR NINE HOURS AFTER THAT, AND THAT SQUISHY DOES MEAN THE FAT IS BREAKING DOWN..

Awesome! That's great to hear. I was feeling it 12 hours after my workout though...does that mean my metabolism is working now? haha
