How to squat without a barbell...

I have barbell weights, but no barbell. I tied together some of the weights to equal 40 lbs. I do deadlifts, but when squatting, would it be better to hug the weights? Or would it be better to McGyver a barbell? I just want to give my legs more of a workout and also be able to squat without my back getting sore, which is probable because I have poor posture to begin with.

Try squats with feet together - no weight. when you can do those easily, progress to a lunge squat with the rear foot up on a chair, progressing to pistol squats - negatives and then full ones. You won't need weights for a long time.

Oh - and have a look at Sissy Squats - again; no weights.

Try doing a goblet squat with one of the plates. You can also do single leg bw squats using a chair or bench for an aiming point. Another bw technique you could use what I call a drop squat - you descend as quickly as possible (free fall), at the bottom you stop yourself instantly.

Ahhhhh squats. I used to squat pretty heavy for a girl. But I'm just getting back into it after a 10+ year hiatus (I know, I'm bad). I want to make sure I start slow and I need to make sure I don't hurt my knees. They creek sometimes when I go upstairs now!

So what form of squats are easy on the knees ?

if you are doing squats properly, it shouldn't bug your knees

I do these when I work out with dumbbells (I've seen them called plie, goblet, and apparently sumo).
