......... i dont get it xD

So my normal size is 12/14 for tops and dresses, bottom half am 14 or 16. (UK sizing). What i don't get how shops are different. My mum gave me some clothes see hardly wore, tried jeans on they were 16 But didnt fit then they were a size 10 dress that was to big for me.... Weird. I just don't get how they can vary so much? Is like i could go to a shop and get a size 10 dress would fit but then i could go to another shop and get a dress that was 14/16 and it be to small but they all use the 'same' measurements....... It just ticks me off....
