People with long hair - how do you sleep at night?

What do you do with the hair?
I'm trying to find a way of containing it that doesn't leave me uncomfortable and doesn't result in me lying on it during the night and pulling my head into strange positions. So far, unsuccessful and the scissors are looking mighty attractive.

I put mine in a messy bun at the top of my head and clip it in so it doesn't bump my hair. Usually gives natural waves too. This means im not lying on my hair or having the clip stick into my head.0
-
Oooh, atop the head is a good idea. As is the bun. And anything that might save my waves for a second day is a-okay with me.0

A rope plait or french plait will keep it contained without digging in the back of the head and neck0
-
leave it down or throw up it in a pony tale or messy bun. it doesn't really bother me lol0
-
a pony tail! or a messy bun type thing! or down!0
-
I often plait my daughters hair, fantastic in the heat as well as it keeps you natural neck scarf tidied away :-))0

I have waist length very thick and curly hair. I tie it in a messy bun of ponytail right at the top of my head so it hangs down behind my pillow. Have to, otherwise the finace tends to roll over on it and give me a nasty wake up!0

My hair completely does my head in at night! A french plait is perfect, if I remember to do it! I normally leave it down, then get annoyed if me or my husband is laying on it and I try to turn over- garrhh!
Got an appointment to get it chopped off today much to husbands disgust :-/0 -

First time my boyfriend stayed over he woke up in the middle of the night and shouted "Argh! A squirrel!"
These are all good tips. I'm definitely thinking I might be able to sleep without trapping it all in an armpit!0 -
Down or very loosely braided. I can't stand the feeling of a bun or ponytail. Too uncomfortable to sleep on.
ETA: If it's down, I grab it all and position it up and behind my head so it's not in my face or in the way.0 -
I just got a 2,3,4 fade (coache's cut)... problem solved... (Sorry I could not be of legitimate help here... just is 4:00 am and had to say it.) Hope you find a workable solution.0

I sleep on my side and my husband sleeps next to me.. so I lift my hair up on the pillow and have it lay north of my head and hanging off the edge towards me so it isn't in his face. Of course my hair is down to my tailbone in length, so it's pretty long..0

Ditto. When I had long hair I always put mine in a messy loose bun on the top of my head.0
-
I leave it loose. When it's really hot (I live in the Arabian Gulf) then I'll tie it in a high ponytail to keep it off my neck and shoulders.0
-
My hair is waist length. I brush it out and gather it into a ponytail on top of my head, but don't pull the end of the hair through all the way (so it's folded over, kinda). This works really well. It stays generally tangle-free and doesn't try to strangle me in my sleep.0

When I had long hair, I usually put it in a high pony tail or a bun on the very top of my head to sleep.0

I don't see how yall can manage to sleep with your hair tied in a bun or pony tail. xD it is so uncomfortable! LOL0

My hair isn't that long, but lately I have been French braiding it and it is really wavy and cute in the morning. It is super thick and frizzy normally so this helps contain it.
I looked up an instructional guide online...I spent 20 years wishing someone I knew knew how to french braid or wishing I could do it and it took me 10 minutes to learn. I was so ashamed/excited.0 -
I sleep quite well, thank you.0
-
always in a pony tail, close my eyes, fall asleep0
-
loose ponytail gathered at the nape of the neck. You get used to it.0

That's exactly what I was thinking! I can't do it, the most I can manage is maybe french braids but I usually leave mine down.
I haven't cut my hair in about a year it's finally down past my shoulders.0 -
put it in a bun and pin my bangs back.0
-
I like to tie my hair up in a half-ponytail where it's tied up low and before pulling the hair all the way through, I leave a bit of it hanging through the headband still as if it just a loose bun (: It doesn't get in the way when I sleep so it is convenient for me (:0

When I used to have a really long hair & I'd put it in plaits,My hair is shorter but even now I still do.Keeps it tangle free & it makes my hair manageable in the morning0

well I've actually researched and found that sleeping in a ponytail or bun is supposed to cause more split ends. The best recommended style for long hair when sleeping is braided or in a silky cap.
But fyi I'm so used to sleeping with a ponytail I do most of the time but I have tons of split ends too. Lol0 -
I put mine in a messy bun at the top of my head
This. It stops your neck getting all hot and you can still lay in any position you want0 -
OK, I just put my hair up in a bun on top of my head. There shall be no sitting up late reading with this! Every movement and the centre of gravity of my head is now so high it's flailing about like crazy!
From a lying down perspective, I can see it could well work very well. Uber neck exposure ftw given my bedroom has a massive south facing bay window and will get epically hot in summer.0 -
I used to have hair down to my waist until last year, and I would just lie my hair over the top edge of the bed so it would hang down to the floor. I never plaited it or anything. I don't need to do that anymore now that it's short0
