A fat man running from zombies

My entire life has been a yo-yo of weight gain, some loss, and gained back again. I was a heavy kid, and I'm a fat adult.

Recently (a year ago), I connected with my doctor and during my 6 month check up warned me that my blood pressure was high, my cholesterol was too high, and basically I was a mess.

I promised him I was going through a lifestyle change, and had vowed to lose weight by exercising and eating healthier. I did, lost 20 pounds, and then completely slacked off and gained 12 back.

He put me on a blood pressure med, and told me if I didn't lose weight for good, a cholesterol medication would be added at the next visit.

I found the myfitnesspal app last month, which had helped me keep track of every single calorie I consume and to log the exercise I do daily.

The real breakthough for me was I found an app for my phone called Zombies, Run! 5k Training. You load it on your phone, and it immerses you into a storyline where you are 'Runner 5', a runner in training in a post-apocalyptic land overrun with zombies. You start out on day 1 with a 30 minute walk. You take a day or two off, then Day 2 is a 10 minute walk, 10 seconds of slow running and a minute walk 10 times, then a ten minute free time where you walk or run and any pace you want. Slowly, the run times are increased ans the storyline progresses. You are sent out on missions to retrieve objects. Your music is interrupted by HQ telling you to pick up the pace, a zombie is close behind you...talk about motivation!

As a fat man with no cardio (as in zero, I can't run a block) I have never been a runner, but this app has kept me motivated! I'm only on week 2, and I look forward to the run every single time.

Even better, I have found a 5k zombie obstacle course in my area...I have 2 months to work on my fitness before I run from the zombies for real!

and a second one in October!

They may eat me this year, but if I keep up the program, they will have to work to catch me next year!

Getting in shape is hard work and motivation...I found my motivation. Zombies...run!!!!!
