Thoughts on calorie deficits?

Just curious as to how MFP members feel about calorie deficits, specifically how large a deficit can/should be before it being detrimental to one's goal. assuming, of course, that weight/fatloss is the goal.

What do you think and, maybe more importantly, WHY do you think that?
