Anyone heard of it? What are your opinions? I'm obviously not good at following a diet or counting calories as I've been on this site forever and only maintained my weight which I guess is better than gaining. The mediterranean diet sounds like something I could enjoy. The way I understand it is you eat a similar diet to the countries on the mediterranean coast. Lots of fish, fruits, veggies and low fat dairy. Stay away from red meats. Any opinions or does anyone have any more information?

Olive oil, nuts, shellfish, and olives are all important to consume in this plan too.

it's a good diet to follow because it avoids a lot of fried foods etc. Japanese diet also pretty good to follow. Careful with mediterranean, whilst olive oil is a good type of oil to cook with, don't over-use it. xxx

There have been epidemiological studies showing that people from Mediterranian countries have lower instances of heart disease, cancers, high blood pressure, stroke, high cholesterol the list goes on. The links to their diet are numerous, but here are a few. Their diet is lower in saturated fat, and saturated fat is linked to raising cholesterol levels (especially LDL or the bad cholesterol) causing all kinds of cardiovascular health problems. Olive oil is high in monounsaturated fat which is shown to increase HDL levels which are the good cholesterol that actually help rid your body of the bad kind. Their diet is high in fiber which helps reduce cholesterol and the insoluble fiber may help reduce the risk of colorectal cancers, although there are conflicting studies on that issue. Their diet is high in Omega 3 fatty acids which protect against blood clot formation, help lower blood pressure and reduce inflamation. Their diet is high in a whole list of phytochemicals that have links to numerous health benefits. These are just a few things....
