I still have a nice fat layer on my stomach, which I know has to go via cardio pretty much.
But, as for ab workouts. I have read before that doing too many is ineffective and doing too little is also obviously not good. What do you think is a good daily goal, what have you seen results with?

You already have six-pack abs. If you want people to see them you have to remove the layer of fat that is covering them up. That's the only way.0

I do, too. Those bags are uber cute and would be helpful! Oh, you meant abs.... yea, proper food and working out will get that. You don't even HAVE to do specific ab work to get them.0

Reduce the quantity of fat you eat by cutting out junk food and switching to lean meats, such as chicken or turkey, avoid sugar and foods that are salty, which can cause bloating. BEER- Stay away from it
Mix crunches and traditional sit-ups. Both have their benefits if done correctly, so there is no reason why you should have to choose between the two. When you do crunches, focus on the different areas of your abdominal muscles, paying special attention to the sides. To burn fat and get a real six-pack, you need to work all of your abdominal muscles, not just the upper half.
Do Core- Strengthening exercises, such as pilates and yoga.
Most of all, keep a strict regimen and clean diet!0 -

I had the same problem, but then I started the Insanity workout. My abs aren't quite a 6 pack yet, but they are getting closer. Mind you i'm nearly 40 and have had 4 kids (the youngest is 3). If you look in my profile you will see what my abs looked like back in October 2012 till now. I did the full 60 day program and did the month 1 portion of insanity again for 2 months and now am doing Mon. Weds and Friday the Max Insanity, and Tues. Thursday the ab workout that comes with the program. As the body fat goes down, the abs will start to show.0

The biggest secret to getting abs is simply consistency with your diet, cardio & weight training regime. Also worth remembering that you can't out exercise a bad diet.0

Maybe if you want average abs but if you want with real depth between the muscle separations I reccomend ab workouts twice a week with intense workouts in a rep range of 8-12 reps for each set.0 -

Ok, so lose fat, occasional ab work, got it. One other thing, why in class do they tell you to "tuck" your abs? What is that doing?0

Look up Pete Sisco.... the static contraction dude. He also agrees (if you see a picture of him you'll understand). Muscles. Yeah. You can have great abs. You won't see them under a layer of fructose induced padding. I had great abs when the nurse came to check on my progress while in hospital after my daughter was born. Even though the post delivery layer was still there, the nurse made a comment about how hard it was to dig past the muscle to find my inner layers. Body shaping is 80% nutrition and also a good mix of cardio and resistance training. You need to have the whole triad working for you. Think of your physique as being on a three legged stool. Take any one of the three of nutrition, cardio or weights away, and it all falls down.0
