odd question: HRMs and arrhythmia

i've found with my mother's combigned blood pressure/pulse rate machine, my arrhythmia tends to confuse the machine. when my heart misses a beat or two it thinks there is an error, that it's lost my pulse, and resets. i wouldn't want to invest in a HRM if it's not going to work.
is there any point in investing in a HRM? does anyone else have any experience or recommendations?
