I usually run during my workouts, so I can't speak for everyone, but this is what I've found in my own experience..
I have to time my workouts between meals (after lunch, after work, before dinner), because if I eat and then go run an hour later, I just feel crappy! I need time for the food to settle in my stomach. That being said, I usually have a small snack (fruit, nuts, something of that nature) midday before I work out, so I have at least something in my stomach. Recently, I've come to really like Larabars (they're entirely fruit and nut with no added sugar and usually only 3-6 ingredients). I usually eat half of one before I work out for a little bit of a boost, but not too much. :-)
As for after workouts, I've read that you should definitely eat within two hours of working out. It always ends up that way for me because I work out right after work, so I'll go home and make dinner. You want to make sure you are getting a good source of protein/carbs in your post-workout, too - so yogurt and fruit with granola, a turkey sandwich, etc. are all good things for after you work out. Sometimes, I find that a glass of milk or chocolate milk is just what I need, too!
Hopefully this helps a little bit - but like I said, this is my personal preference! Try this website for a few tips.. :-)

For me - eating afterwards works best. I work out in the evening as soon as I get home from work. I'll have a light snack around 3pm, work out at 7pm- ish and have dinner afterwards.0
