My mother makes pinto bean "soup". It is just pinto beans, water, and a ham hock cooked all day. i love them but eat mostly the broth with bread. My question is how many calories would be in the broth, not sure how to figure that one out considering I dont have a recpie or amounts of ingredients.

Even though you dont know the amounts, I would say guessing the amounts in the recipe calculator would be more accurate than me just randomly guessing :) is there an entry for pork broth or anything? i bet that would approximate.

Ham hocks are quite fatty, so you'll be eating that along with the beans and water. To make it lower in calories / fat, if that's what you want, ask you mum to use enough water to cover the beans generously, even when it's finished cooking. Then cool it, put it in the fridge and the fat will solidify on the top and can be removed very easily. You'll find that it still tastes delicious and anyone who wants the fat can just add it back in.
