Running success stories

I have been running a lot this past month. If you run I would like to hear your success stories, where your fitness level was when you started and where it is now :)

Running has completely improved my fitness! I joined a running club when we moved to Northern VA a few years ago and began training for my second half marathon. At the time we moved (Oct 2010), I could barely run 2 miles without stopping. I've made wonderful friends through my club and will be running my 7th marathon on Sunday. I never thought I would run 26.2 miles! It has toned my hips and thighs like no other exercise and I'm in the best shape of my life.

I restarted running in early 2011 after several years of doing nothing. At the time I weighed about 210 (male 6' 0"), smoked 1 1/2 packs of cigarettes every day, and drank about 3 or 4 beers every night. Now I weigh 172, haven't smoked for over 2 years, and drink alcohol maybe once a month or less.

When I started running 3 miles at around a 12 min/mi pace was a hard effort. Now I run 70 miles a week mostly between 8:00 to 8:30/mi. I also ran a marathon last year in 3:32 and regularly win or at least place in my age group in local races.

Also, I was beginning to wheeze when breathing and having random chest pains in 2010. All of that is gone now. Blood pressure is down and my resting heart rate on a rested day is down to 38.

Running has done me a lot of good and probably saved me some time I otherwise would have spent in a hospital.
