How does everyone deal with working away from home?

I spend 5 days a week away in hotels and either end up eating a depressing prepared salad out of its plastic container or pigging out in a local restaurant - how do you deal with away trips? I have found a couple of places like La Tasca who offer decent(ish) healthy choices but any recommendations?

Do you end up at the same places often? Have a list of restaurants in those places you know have good choices - or of chains that are in multiple places. If you use Yelp or anything you can use the search term Healthy restaurants and might get some decent results. Try and get a hotel room w/a fridge if possible so you can hit up the grocery store from some healthy snacks. Lots of grocery stores - and even Starbucks (and I'm sure other places) sell fruit cups or veggie packs in single serve sizes. Some grocery delis even sell grilled chicken breasts - pair that w/a salad and you're doing pretty well.

If you have a smart phone or your laptop w/you then do some research on the area food before you're starving and searching out a place to eat. This is when bad things happen.

Pack some healthy portable snacks in your luggage - kind bars, nuts, protein bars, raisins, etc..

    Hi,

It's usually different places, have actually started taking portable hotplates around with me :) just to make things a bit more interesting.

Some googling of your location might help find dome fitness/lighter menus.

Also, any place that actually has a real chef and real kitchen can make something off the menu. We do this because of allergies, but you could do that too. You see a salmon on a creamy risotto - ask for just the salmon and a salad, baked potato, or something.

Out of chains, I like Ruby Tuesdays - for their salad bar. They actually have a lot of fresh stuff, lots of different veggies and also multiple protein options. Everything on their actual menu is horrendous though....

And a tip from my hubby - buy a warm roasted chicken from a grocery store and pick a few things from the salad bar (or maybe veggies with dip, or whatever they might have as a side).

Breakfast is easier usually - eggs and fruit for example, or eggs and toast, or maybe an omelet with lots of veggies?
